Please don’t dump your site with advertisements, banners etc. before getting sufficient traffic from search engines, or else you will fall in the pit of failure. Remember it’s easy to get links for a non-commercial site rather than the commercial one, and you can maintain those links later as long as you follow the theme of your webpage.

To generate revenue from your website or blog, first optimize your site with relevant content, generate some traffic and wait until your site gets listed in majority of search engines ( especially Google, Yahoo and MSN ) and directories ( such as Dmoz ). This will give your site good rankings in search engine listings, which will automatically generate traffic for your site. The logic behind this is, providing the user a good content will boost traffic and will let you earn more revenue.

This procedure can take time from one month to one year, which depends on the efforts you take for optimization of your site.

Text ads consists of text which is simple, clear, short, Specific, targeted and compelling without being misleading. These ads are targeted so as to match the theme of your site. When matched with the background theme of your site, they appear as a part of your website and not advertisements. They generate good conversions. Image ads comes in the same category.

Referrals are buttons linking to the advertiser’s site. They are available in variable shapes and sizes as provided by the advertiser. By adding a referral button to your site, you connect new users to the advertisers advertising programs. These are slower in generating revenue, but provide certain percentage of income from the sites recommended by you, which can generate good amount of revenue later.
